Technical Assistance:
* Please ensure that staff are placing infants on their backs to sleep, in cribs. Children may use swings and rockers, while they are awake, but once they fall asleep they should be moved to a crib. Please ensure that staff are practicing and following safe sleep guidelines.
Comments:
An unannounced complaint inspection was conducted on June 18, 2024 in response to a complaint that was received by the Virginia Department of Education, Office of Child Care Health and Safety. Interviews were conducted with staff relating to allegations of children being placed in swings/rockers for naps, staff rocking cribs with their feet, staff qualifications. Based upon a preponderance of evidence, the information gathered during the investigation supports the allegations of infants placed in swings and rockers for their nap, and the complaint is determined to be valid. Please complete the columns for 'description of action to be taken' and 'date to be corrected' for each violation cited on the violation notice, and then return a signed and dated copy to the licensing office within 10 business days. Based on observation, the facility did not use the infant rockers and swings as recommended by the manufacturer and follow ASTM safety guidelines. Evidence: observed and identified through staff interviews, the facility starts the infants' nap either in the swing for the first half of their nap or the cribs for the first half of their nap. The children are either moved from the swing to the crib or moved from the crib to the swing. Staff stated that one child has their entire nap in the swing per the parent's request. The swings/rockers used were from Graco, MommaRoo, and Fisher Price, and all of the manufacturer's stated that they should not be used for sleeping.
