Comments:
An unannounced renewal inspection took place on August 27, 2019. There were 15 children in care from ages 3 years old to 5 years old with 4 staff providing care and supervision. The inspector reviewed 5 children's records on site. The LI reviewed 5 staff records and 1 board officer record at the center. There were no medications at the center. Children were observed during the following activities: gardening, hand washing practices, circle time, preparation for naptime, and lunch time. The inspector also reviewed emergency drill documentation, first aid kits, employee and parent policies and procedures, and emergency supplies. There were discussions about drills and the renewal application. The inspection was conducted from approximately 10:25AM to 2:30 PM. Findings were reviewed with staff at the conclusion. Based on observation and discussion, the facility failed to ensure that areas and equipment of the center, inside and outside, shall be maintained in a clean, safe and operable condition. Unsafe conditions shall include, but not be limited to, splintered, cracked or otherwise deteriorating wood; chipped or peeling paint; visible cracks, bending or warping, rusting or breakage of any equipment; head entrapment hazards; and protruding nails, bolts or other components that could entangle clothing or snag skin.
Evidence:
1. The stairs adjacent to the chicken coop were splintered, deteriorated or broken in several places. Approximately ten stairs/timbers were in disrepair and posed as potential tripping and/or snagging hazards. 2. When the inspector asked staff if children ever used the stairs, she verified that children access the stairs for fire drills.
Plan of Correction:
Staff stated that they plan to fix the stair case and pointed out that materials had already been purchased.
