Comments:
An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted today, February 18, 2020 to determine compliance with child day center standards. The inspection was initiated at 11:00 am and concluded at 2:00 pm. Upon the inspector's arrival, preschool children and the two year old class were outside on the playground. Children played on small trikes, in the sand box and in the playhouse. In the toddler class children were playing with animal puppets and a race track with cars. Staff participated in play making animal sounds with the children and racing the cars. Infants were observed having play time on the floor with books and toys. Later children listened to stories and prepared for lunch. Bathroom breaks and hand washing was conducted. Today's lunch consisted of tomato soup, grilled cheese sandwich, pears and milk. Nap time was also observed. All areas of the center to include the playground area were inspected. The center has age appropriate materials and equipment. The first aid kit and non-medical emergency supplies were reviewed and found complete. Required posted documentation was reviewed. The inspector interacted with staff and children in care. Five children's records and five staff records were reviewed. Staff on site have current CPR, First aid, DHO and MAT certification. Per the director, currently medication is not being administered and is not on site. The most recent evacuation drill was documented on 02/04/2020. The two required shelter-in-place drills for 2019 were completed on 03/19/2019 and 10/17/2019. A lock down drill was conducted on 09/18/2019. Today's Census: Infants: 4 infants with 1 staff. Toddler: 8 children with 2 staff. Two's: 11 children with 2 staff. Pre-school 3-5 years: 14 children with 2 staff.
Violations cited during the licensure period were checked for corrections. There were no repeat violations cited during today's inspection. If you have questions regarding this inspection, please contact the licensing inspector at 804-662-9758.
Based on observation, the center did not ensure all areas of the center, inside and outside, were maintained in a clean, safe and operable condition.
Evidence:
A metal heat vent in the floor of the preschool classroom was bent at the edges and turned upward posing a tripping hazard. The vents grill was also bent creating a pinching point and area that could snag the skin of a child in care.
Plan of Correction:
Per the director: I will purchase a new vent and have in installed.
