Today we discussed sight supervision and hand washing.
Comments:
An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted today 10:30am - 1:30pm. There were 139 children in care ages two through five years old with 24 teachers. Children records and staff emergency contact information were reviewed on site. Staff records are housed at a central location and will be reviewed at a later date. A walking tour of the center inside and outside was completed. Required postings, annual inspections, emergency evacuation drills first aid kit and medication were reviewed. Children were observed in teacher and self-directed activities including restroom routines, hand washing, lunch and inside and outside play activities. A single violation regarding hand washing was identified and appears on the violation notice. The violation was discussed with the program director on site at the conclusion of the inspection.
Based on observation and interview the center failed to ensure that staff wash their hands after diaper changing. Evidence; 1 - Staff 1 did not wash her hands after changing the diaper of a child in care, before unlocking a cabinet and retrieving cleaning supplies. 2 - Staff 1 stated "to prevent cross contamination" she should have washed her hands before unlocking the cabinet to retrieve the cleaning supplies.
Plan of Correction:
Staff will be reminded and retrained in proper hand washing procedures before and after diaper changing.
