A complaint investigation was conducted on July 27, 2019 to investigate a complaint regarding child discipline. Based on staff interviews, the allegations made by the complainant regarding inappropriate discipline were determined to be valid. Please call me if you have any questions at 804-662-9766 or e-mail tara.barton@dss.virginia.gov.
Based on staff interviews, the facility failed to provide behavioral guidance that is constructive in nature, age and stage appropriate, and intended to redirect children to appropriate behavior. Evidence: Staff 1 stated in June 2019, she told an 8 year old child that if she did not stop misbehaving, "we will have to call the monkey in the closet". Staff stated in interviews that they have overheard other staff stating "Do you want to go see the monkey in the closet?" to the school age children as a means of discipline.
Plan of Correction:
Staff will be re-trained on acceptable means of discipline.
