Comments:
A monitoring inspection was initiated on 10/18/22 and concluded on 10/18/22. There were 12 children present, ranging in ages from six to 10, with three staff supervising. The inspector reviewed compliance in the areas of administration, physical plant, staffing and supervision, programming, medication, special care and emergencies and nutrition. A total of three child records and two staff records were reviewed.
Information gathered during the inspection determined noncompliance with applicable standards or law and violations were documented on the violation notice issued to the facility.

Violations:
Standard #: 8VAC20-780-510-L
Description: Based on observation, the center failed to keep medication in a locked place using a safe locking method that prevents access by children.

Evidence:

1. Medication was kept in a draw string bag. The bag was kept on a rolling cart that the staff took with them when transitioning from the cafeteria to the black top. The cart was left unattended on the black top while the staff and children went to the top of the hill to play soccer.
2. A child that arrived late had access to the cart as he put his belongings down before joining the other children and staff on the hill.

Plan of Correction: The center will obtain a lock box to lock the medication up. Staff will be trained to ensure medication is always locked.
