Technical Assistance:
Effective January 1, 2025, the VDOE will begin determining compliance with ? 22.1-289.057 of the Code of Virginia, which is legislation passed by the General Assembly in 2020. The law requires all licensed child day programs, religious exempt child day centers that serve preschool age children, and certified preschools to test potable drinking water. The law requires that programs submit their plans and test results to the Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water (VDH ODW) and the Superintendent. If the results of the testing indicate elevated lead levels, the program shall remediate, retest, and resubmit results to VDH ODW and the Superintendent. There is an additional alternative bottled water option that comes with additional requirements. The statutory requirement can be found online at https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title22.1/chapter14.1/section22.1-289.057/.

Resources are now available for providers on the "What's New" webpage on the ChildCareVA website at https://www.childcare.virginia.gov/providers/what-s-new.

Comments:
An annual RECDC inspection was conducted on 5/23/24 from 10:10 to 11:30. The center had 46 children present in 5 grouping, with 10 classroom staff and 4 other support staff.
It was field day and lots of stations were set up outside. Children were drawing, doing art and writing as well as playing during the inspection. Lots of interaction between staff and children observed. The center has lots of materials and space to explore. A violation notice was given to the center with this inspection summary. Please call me at 703-203-8659 or email me at pernille.brandt@doe.virginia.gov if you have any questions regarding this inspection.

Violations:
Standard #: 22.1-289.031-B-1
Description: The center did not wash the children's hands before eating lunch.
Evidence: During the inspection the children were ready to eat lunch and when the inspector asked if they had washed their hands the staff said they use hand sanitizer before eating.

Plan of Correction: We will take the children downstairs to wash hands and we will stop using hand sanitizer when in the building where soap and water is accessible.

Standard #: 22.1-289.035-B-4
Description: Based on the review of 4 staff records, the center failed to get some background checks required by the code.
Evidence: Reviewed four staff records, staff 2 and staff 4 are missing background checks from states they have resided in the last 5 years.

Plan of Correction: We will request the required background checks from out of state for the staff.
