State Board Social Services (SBSS)

The State Board of Social Services is a policy board with members appointed by the Governor. The Board includes a representative from each of the five Department of Social Services regions, as well as a health care professional and representatives from the child care profession. The Board is authorized, under Title 63.2, Chapter 2, Article 2, to adopt regulations necessary to carry out social services programs and activities.

Among the areas regulated by the Board are critical assistance programs, including TANF & SNAP. Also under the purview of the Board are child welfare programs, such as CPS, Foster Care & Adoption, as well as licensure of assisted living facilities and child-caring facilities. Child support enforcement is also regulated by the Board.

Because of the Board's regulatory oversight of these important human services programs, they play a key role in meeting the Department of Social Services' mission: To design and deliver high-quality human services that help Virginians achieve safety, independence and overall well-being.
