How Can I Meet SNAP Work Requirements?

If the SNAP work requirement applies to you, you must complete 80 hours of qualifying activities each month. If you do not complete these hours, you can receive no more than three months of SNAP benefits in any three-year period.

What Counts Toward the Work Requirement?

Qualifying activities may include:

  • Paid work: Part-time or full-time employment, including self-employment, can count toward the monthly requirement.
  • Volunteer or community service: Volunteer hours may count when they are completed with and verified by an eligible nonprofit or government organization.
  • Education and training: Approved education and job training programs may also count.

You can combine hours from different qualifying activities to reach the 80-hour monthly requirement. For example, you may combine hours worked at a job with hours spent in an approved training program or volunteering.

Income and the Work Requirement

In some circumstances, you can meet the work requirement by earning at least $935.25 per month, regardless of how many hours you work. If you meet this income threshold, you do not need to complete additional qualifying activities to meet the monthly 80-hour requirement.
