Annual Report on Child Death Investigations

This report provides annual data on child deaths related to abuse or neglect that were investigated by CPS. It includes information about the children and families involved, contributing circumstances and trends that can help strengthen prevention efforts and improve child safety.

This fact sheet provides an overview of CPS data across the child and family services continuum, including family assessments, investigations, child fatalities and human trafficking cases, to help inform prevention, intervention and support for Virginia’s children and families.

CPS Referral Reports

Types of Abuse

This report shows reported abuse and neglect cases across Virginia by area. It highlights location trends and allows comparisons between counties.

Source of Reports

This report looks at where CPS reports came from, such as schools, doctors, police, and community members, to show who reported suspected abuse or neglect.

Disposition and Risk Level

This report explains the results of investigated reports (such as founded or unfounded) and the level of risk assigned to each case, for each locality. 

Referrals and Findings

This report shows how many CPS referrals were received in each locality, whether they were accepted or screened out and if law enforcement or the Commonwealth Attorney was made aware of the referral.

Substance Exposed Infants

This report looks at where CPS reports came from, such as schools, doctors, police, and community members, to show who reported suspected abuse or neglect.

 

Out of Family Investigations Report

This report provides data on CPS investigations involving alleged abuse or neglect in settings outside the home, such as schools and child care programs. It includes information about where incidents occurred, investigation outcomes and trends that can help strengthen safety and prevention efforts. CPS Safety Score Card

The Safety Scorecard shows how well VDSS is protecting children by tracking response times, safety assessments, repeat maltreatment, and support for families. It helps the community see that VDSS is paying close attention and working every day to keep kids safe.
