Technical assistance was provided and standards reviewed in the following areas: 8VAC20-790-600 Staff training and development
Effective January 1, 2025, the VDOE will begin determining compliance with ? 22.1-289.057 of the Code of Virginia, which is legislation passed by the General Assembly in 2020. The law requires all licensed child day programs, religious exempt child day centers that serve preschool age children, and certified preschools to test potable drinking water. The law requires that programs submit their plans and test results to the Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water (VDH ODW) and the Superintendent. If the results of the testing indicate elevated lead levels, the program shall remediate, retest, and resubmit results to VDH ODW and the Superintendent. There is an additional alternative bottled water option that comes with additional requirements. A subsidy health and safety inspection (SHSI) was conducted in conjunction with the licensing inspection. Subsidy standards that are not covered in licensing standards were reviewed during this SHSI. Information gathered during the inspection determined non-compliance with applicable standards or law, and violations are documented on the violation notice issued to the program.

Standard #: 8VAC20-790-600-D-1 Description: All staff who work directly with children shall have within 90 days of the date of employment current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) appropriate to the ages of children in care. The training shall include an in-person competency demonstration.
The record for Staff #2 did not contain documentation that an in-person competency demonstration was included in the staff?s CPR training.Plan of Correction: All staff will have in-person CPR training within 90 days of employment. Staff #2 will take the CPR/First aid class on 11/12.
Standard #: 8VAC20-790-600-F Description: Staff who work directly with children shall annually attend at least 16 hours of training and staff development activities, to include the department?s health and safety update course.
The record for Staff #1 (program director) was missing documentation that the department?s health and safety update course was completed for 2023.Plan of Correction: Management will make sure all training hours are up to date and are within state requirements.
