Potable Water Lead Testing Requirements
The VDOE recently distributed memos to licensed child day programs, certified preschools and religiously exempt child day centers, sharing the requirement to develop and implement a plan to test potable water pursuant to ? 22.1-289.057 of the Code of Virginia. The VDOE will begin determining compliance with this statute effective January 1, 2025. The memos can be found on the VDOE child care website: www.childcare.virginia.gov.

An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm with the center director. There were 96 children, ranging from eight months to 11 years of age, present with 16 staff supervising. Infant care was observed and older children were observed playing outside on the playground, participating in graduation practice, playing in structured learning centers, and engaged in circle time activities. Eight child records and five staff records were reviewed, along with the written daily attendance, written allergy list, emergency drill log, and eight medications and authorization forms. Evidence: the record for staff #4, (Date of hire: 9/15/2022), who indicated that they have lived out of the state of Virginia in the past five years, had no documentation of an out of child abuse and neglect search request.
