Potable Water Lead Testing Requirements
The VDOE recently distributed memos to licensed child day programs, certified preschools and religiously exempt child day centers, sharing the requirement to develop and implement a plan to test potable water pursuant to ? 22.1-289.057 of the Code of Virginia. The VDOE will begin determining compliance with this statute effective January 1, 2025. The memos can be found on the VDOE child care website: www.childcare.virginia.gov.

Comments:
An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted from 3:00 - 5:00pm with the director. There were 120 children, ranging from four months to ten years of age, present with 18 staff supervising. Infant care was observed, and older children were observed waking from nap, eating snack, and reading books. Snack served today: cheez its and applesauce. Eight child records, six staff records, and three medications were reviewed along with the emergency drill log, daily attendance, written allergy list, menu, and required posted information. Description: Based on an inspection of the large playground, it was determined that the mulch under and around play equipment was not resilient. Evidence: The depth of the wood chips was measured in three spots around the center composite play structure on the preschool/school age playground. All three spots measured less than six inches in depth.

Standard #: 8VAC20-780-500-B
Description: Based on observation, the facility failed to ensure that all diapering procedures were followed, as required. A nonabsorbent surface (changing table) shall be used for diapering children under three years of age. Evidence: In the two's classroom, staff was observed changing a child standing up in the bathroom, and placing their diaper/pullup on the floor. Staff stated that the child was two years old.
