Potable Water Lead Testing Requirements
The VDOE recently distributed memos to licensed child day programs, certified preschools and religiously exempt child day centers, sharing the requirement to develop and implement a plan to test potable water pursuant to ? 22.1-289.057 of the Code of Virginia. The VDOE will begin determining compliance with this statute effective January 1, 2025. The memos can be found on the VDOE child care website: www.childcare.virginia.gov.

Comments:
An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted from 9:30 - 10:30am with the center director. There were 41 children, ranging from six months to five years of age, present with nine staff supervising. Infant care was observed and older children were observed playing on the playground, completing an art project, and preparing for graduation. Five child records and four staff records were reviewed, along with the emergency drill log, written daily attendance, written allergy list, three medications and authorization forms, one allergy care plan and the required posted information. Two playgrounds were also observed. If you have further questions about this inspection please contact Donna Liberman at 540-359-5244 or Donna.Liberman@doe.virginia.gov.

Violations:
Standard #: 22.1-289.035-B-4
Description: Based on review of four staff records, it was determined that Out of State background checks were not conducted as required for staff who indicated they have lived outside of Virginia in the past five years. Evidence: the record for staff #3, (Date of hire: 2/4/2024), who indicated that they have lived out of the state of Virginia in the past five years, had no documentation of an out of child abuse and neglect search request or out of state criminal history name check.

Plan of Correction: Not available online. Contact Inspector for more information.

Standard #: 8VAC20-780-270-A
Description: Based on observation, it was determined that not all areas inside the center were maintained in a safe and operable condition. Evidence: In the infant classroom, there were two cribs with loose fitting sheets. Loose crib sheets are a suffocation hazard and increase the risk of sudden unexplained infant death.

Plan of Correction: Not available online. Contact Inspector for more information.
