Potable Water Lead Testing Requirements:
The VDOE recently distributed memos to licensed child day programs, certified preschools and religiously exempt child day centers, sharing the requirement to develop and implement a plan to test potable water pursuant to ? 22.1-289.057 of the Code of Virginia. The VDOE will begin determining compliance with this statute effective January 1, 2025. The memos can be found on the VDOE child care website: www.childcare.virginia.gov.

New: MAT Seizure Rescue Nasal Spray Online Course:
The Medication Administration Training (MAT) Program recently announced the new MAT Seizure Rescue Nasal Spray (SRNS) online course. The training is available for free on the MAT Online Learning Center and will enable MAT-Certified providers to administer this emergency medication quickly and correctly in the event of an emergency seizure situation.

Comments:
An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted 5/14/2024 from 9:50am through 12:30pm. There were 39 children directly supervised by 8 staff and all classrooms were in ratio. The physical plant, outdoor playground area, programming, menus, 6 staff records, 6 children?s records, 12 medications, emergency drills, injury reports, emergency supplies, and policies were inspected. Children were observed building with Legos, playing outside, playing with kinetic sand, and eating lunch. Positive interactions between children and staff were observed during this inspection. There was an adequate supply of age appropriate materials for the children. The center was clean and organized. There was an adequate number of CPR/First Aid, Daily Health Observation, and MAT trained staff on site at the time of inspection. Areas of non-compliance are identified in the Violation Notice.

Description: Based on observation and documentation review, the center did not maintain a written record of daily attendance that documents the arrival and departure of each child in care as it occurs.

Evidence: In the Junior Kindergarten classroom, there were 9 children signed in on the written attendance but only 8 children were present in the classroom.

Standard #: 8VAC20-780-340-D
Description: Based on record review and staff interview, the center did not ensure that at least one staff member who meets the qualifications of a program leader or program director is regularly present in each grouping of children.

Evidence: Staff #2 (Date of Hire: 11/21/2023) was identified as the lead teacher in the Junior Kindergarten room, Staff #4 (Date of Hire: 11/29/2021) was identified as the lead teacher in the Baby Steps I room, and Staff #5 (Date of Hire: 5/2/2024) was identified as the lead teacher in the Preschool Explorers room. Staff #2, Staff #4, and Staff #5 do not have documentation of program leader or program director qualifications on file.
