Potable Water Lead Testing Requirements
The VDOE recently distributed memos to licensed child day programs, certified preschools and religiously exempt child day centers, sharing the requirement to develop and implement a plan to test potable water pursuant to ? 22.1-289.057 of the Code of Virginia. The VDOE will begin determining compliance with this statute effective January 1, 2025. The memos can be found on the VDOE child care website: www.childcare.virginia.gov.

New: MAT Seizure Rescue Nasal Spray Online Course
The Medication Administration Training (MAT) Program recently announced the new MAT Seizure Rescue Nasal Spray (SRNS) online course. The training is available for free on the MAT Online Learning Center and will enable MAT-Certified providers to administer this emergency medication quickly and correctly in the event of an emergency seizure situation.

Comments:
An unannounced renewal inspection was conducted 6/12/2024 between the hours of 11:30am through 12:45pm. There were a total of 8 children present, ranging in age from 11 months to 5 years old (20 points), with the Provider and 1 assistant. A total of 8 children?s files, 2 staff files, and 3 household member?s files were reviewed. The children were engaged in various free play activities, eating lunch, and getting ready for nap time. Lunch served today consisted of milk, beef meatballs, apples, carrots, tomatoes, and rice. A complete inspection of the programming space, children and staff records, emergency drills, menu, attendance, and emergency procedures were completed today. No new staff have been hired since the last inspection. The provider advised there was no medication on site today. There was an adequate supply of age appropriate materials and toys. Areas of non-compliance are identified in the Violation Notice.

Description: REPEAT VIOLATION

Based on record review, the provider did not ensure that children's records contained all required information.

Evidence: Child #1's record was missing two emergency contact names, addresses, and phone numbers, the medical insurance policy number, and the parent's signed acknowledgement of the receipt of the information on the information for parents form.

Standard #: 8VAC20-800-430-A
Description: Based on observation, children under two years of age had access to stairs.

Evidence: Three children under the age of two years were present at the time of inspection and there was no gate at the bottom of the stairs leading into the programming space where the children were playing.

Description: Based on observation, the provider did not ensure that children's hands are washed with liquid soap and warm running water before eating.

Evidence: 6 children transitioned from free play activities to eating lunch without first washing their hands before beginning to eat.
