Comments:
An unannounced renewal inspection was conducted today, January 12, 2023. The inspector was on site from approximately 2:55 pm until 5:00 pm. There were nine children present with two caregivers supervising for a value of 19 points. The provider was not in attendance at the time of the Inspector?s arrival but arrived approximately 30 minutes later. Upon the inspector?s arrival children were getting up from nap and preparing for snack. Children washed their hands before sitting at the tables for snack. Later children played in centers consisting of play dough, kinetic sand, and magnetic blocks. Positive interactions were observed between the caregivers and the children. The inspector reviewed compliance in the areas of administration, physical plant, staffing and supervision, programming, medication, special care and emergencies and nutrition. A walk through of the entire home was also conducted. A total of five child records, four caregiver records and one household member record were reviewed. The inspector interacted with the provider and children in care.
Information gathered during the inspection determined non-compliance with applicable standards or law and violations were documented on the violation notice issued to the program. If you have any questions regarding this inspection, please contact the licensing inspector.

Violations:
Standard #: 8VAC20-800-140-D
Description: Based on interview, the provider did not ensure a substitute provider recorded and signed the time of arrival and departure on each day that the substitute provider worked.

Evidence:

On 01/12/2023, caregiver #2 was the assigned substitute provider upon the inspector?s arrival. After the provider returned to the family day home, she stated she had been away for more than two hours and did not have the substitute provider record and sign the time of arrival and departure as she was unaware of the requirement.

Plan of Correction: Per the provider: I will print a log sheet and have the substitute provider record all arrival and departures when she is the assigned substitute provider.

Standard #: 8VAC20-800-280
Description: Based on observation, the provider did not ensure potentially poisonous substances, materials and supplies such as, but not limited to, cleaning agents, disinfectants and deodorizers were stored away from food in areas inaccessible to children.

Evidence:

The door of the utility room, where cleaning supplies are kept on shelves and on the floor, was open creating the possibility of access to the supplies by children in care. The utility room is located next to the bathroom used by children in care.

Plan of Correction: The caregiver closed and ensured the door to the utility room was locked. Per the provider: I will review with staff to make sure the door is closed and locked after entering and exiting the utility room.
