The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) is introducing a new card lock/unlock security feature that will launch at the end of January to protect Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. This feature helps safeguard customers' Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards from skimming and other fraudulent activities that attempt to steal card numbers and PINs.
Through the official ConnectEBT app (free from Apple and Google app stores) or online portal, you can easily lock and unlock your EBT card at the grocery store with just a few taps on your phone. This added layer of security is an additional tool you can use to help protect your SNAP benefits while giving you full control over your account.
The ConnectEBT app is the only officially licensed app for your Virginia SNAP EBT benefits.
Locking the card involves just a few simple steps:
-
Download or open the ConnectEBT app on your mobile device.
-
Securely log into your account through the app and tap the "Lock/Unlock" icon on the home screen.
-
Select "Lock My Card Everywhere" and click "OK."
-
The card is now locked, and benefits are protected! Whenever you go shopping, use the app to unlock your card and lock it again after you check out. It's that easy!
To unlock your card, securely log into your account in the app, select Unlock My Card on the screen, then click OK when prompted and click OK one more time to confirm.
You will see on-screen confirmation that you've locked or unlocked your card. You can also call the Virginia EBT Client Customer Service Helpdesk at 866-281-2448 to speak to a representative to unlock your card.
VDSS offers this feature to help prevent benefits theft. If you suspect your EBT card was accessed or used without your consent, immediately change your card PIN and call the Client Customer Service Helpdesk at 866-281-2448.
